Slow Start Dooms Coker

Hartsville, SC – Coker College fell in a deep hole to start the game Saturday afternoon and couldn’t climb out in a 77-46 loss to Longwood University.  The Cobras trailed by as many as 40 points in the loss and now drop to 6-8 on the year and 4-4 in the CVAC, while the Lancers improve to 12-3, and 6-2 in the conference.

After a layup by freshman Sarah Dorsch tied the score at 2-2, LU went on a 21-0 run that was too much for Coker to recover from. The biggest factor in the dismal start was the 17 turnovers CC committed in the half. To add to their troubles, the Cobras managed only 4-20 shooting in the period and were 4-8 from the line.

The Cobras cut down on the miscues in the second half but still didn’t hit the 20 point barrier until the 11:05 mark.  Coker did do a good job on the boards, where they matched the number one rebounding team in the conference with 40 rebounds a piece.

Junior Leanne Chandler scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Cobras.  Classmate Cecily Shipmon scored nine and grabbed two steals and Frederica McClary finished with a team-high nine rebounds.  Marita Meldere led Longwood with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Leigh Farmer also reached double figures with 10 points in reserve duty.

The Cobras will be at home again this Tuesday, January 28, for a 5:30 tip off against St. Andrews.
