Cobras Post Second Consecutive Victory
Hartsville, SC – After not reaching the 90 point mark in over five years, the Coker women have now reached it in consecutive games. The Cobras used a dominating first half on their way to a convincing 90-66 victory over Limestone Friday evening in women’s collegiate basketball. Coker evens its record at 8-8 on the year and moves to 6-4 in the conference, while Limestone falls to 0-16 and 0-10 in the CVAC.
The Cobras burned LC early on, opening the game with a 24 unanswered points which ended any suspense early. Coker held the Saints scoreless until the 11:00 mark when Joy Hyman hit a three to make it 24-3. CC sliced through the Limestone defense with precise passing which created open shots for the home team.
Junior Leanne Chandler was especially effective in the opening twenty minutes, as she passed out of multiple double-teams to give her teammates layups and open looks. By the break Chandler had recorded 10 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.
Limestone made an initial run to cut the lead down to twenty points but could never mount a serious threat. Coker’s lead hovered around twenty points for much of the second period with the Cobras comfortably in control.
The Cobras connected on 57.1 percent of their shots in both halves, and made 14 of their 17attempts from the foul line. Coker out-rebounded LC 41-34 and did a much better job handling the ball, with a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio in the game.
Chandler ended the game with 20 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, just missing out on her first career triple-double. Junior Frederica McClary scored 15 points on 7-8 shooting and grabbed seven boards. Classmate Shamae Hemingway finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Selena Davis totaled 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Freshman Sarah Dorsch also turned in a solid performance with eight points, six assists, and three steals.
Hyman led the Saints with 17 points and Shell Lowrence finshed with 16 points. Laura Knapp, who leads the CVAC in rebounding, recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cobras hit the road this Monday, February 3, for a 5:30 tip-off at Anderson College.
