Cobras Go To Overtime For Win
Hartsville, SC – Coker needed an extra five minutes to put away a feisty Erskine team 56-51 Saturday afternoon in women’s collegiate basketball. After failing to put the game away on their last possession of regulation, the Cobras out-scored EC 5-0 in the extra frame to pull out the victory. Coker improves to 9-10 on the season and 7-6 in the CVAC, while the Flying Fleet drops back to 6-11, and 3-10 in the conference.
The Cobras played a solid all-around game in the first period, but saw Erskine grab nine offensive rebounds on their way to a 27-25 lead at the break. Erskine led by six with 3:49 to play but CC scored the final four points to pull back within two.
The two teams remained even throughout the second period, with the Flying Fleet making the final run to even the score up at 51-51. Coker led by six with five minutes to play but EC patiently reeled the Cobras in.
In overtime Coker got a free throw and two buckets from junior Frederica McClary and held the Fleet scoreless to put it away.
McClary led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points and nine rebounds. Senior Lou Brunson got the start and made good with 12 points, while junior Selena Davis finished with nine points. Freshman Justina Dakins totaled eight points three rebounds and three assists, and junior Leanne Chandler finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
Chacee Whittington led Erskine with 13 points and nine rebounds, and Tre’ Wylie recorded 11 points and five boards.
The Cobras will face third-place Lees-McRae in Banner Elk, NC this Tuesday, February 11 at 5:30 PM.
