Coker Wins Second Straight

Wilson, NC – Coker College narrowly missed its fourth consecutive victory in a 62-60 defeat at Barton College Saturday in women’s collegiate basketball.  The Cobras shot only 33 percent on a night where they did most everything else well.  Coker slips to 5-7 and 3-3 in the CVAC, while the Bulldogs improve to 6-5, and 3-2 in the conference.

Coker overcame an early deficit to regain control late in the first half. Freshman Sarah Dorsch hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds left in the half to put the Cobras ahead 33-26 at the break. CC forced 10 Bulldog turnovers in the period while only committing four of its own.

The Cobras pushed the lead to nine points twice in the second half but BC eventually caught up to tie the game at 52-52 with 6:17 to play. Barton took the lead after a Coker turnover and never relinquished it. Turnovers were the deciding factor in the half as CC turned it over 10 times for 13 Bulldog points but only forced the home team into five.

Junior Shamae Hemingway posted her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.  Junior Leanne Chandler added 14 points and nine rebounds, and freshman Justina Dakins scored 13 points in the game, including a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining that put the Cobras within one point at 61-60.  

Barton’s Lisa Halttunen led all scorers with 23 and backcourt mate Kee Kee Gorham finished with 13 points and five assists.

The Cobras will play their third game in five days this Monday, January 20, against Belmont Abbey.  The Crusaders come to town for a 5:30 tip-off.
