Coker Women Add Seven

Hartsville, SC – Coker women’s soccer coach Chris Ayer announced the addition of seven new players for the 2004 season.  Joining the Cobras are sophomore transfer Kim Hemenway/Lake Charles, LA, and freshmen Katie Hall/Roswell, GA, Stephanie Foster/Stone Mountain, GA, Brooke Basham/North Myrtle Beach, Shelly Heinzelman/Chapin, Micah Jordan/North Myrtle Beach, and Monica Winn/Irmo.

“I’m extremely excited about this incoming class of recruits,” stated head coach Chris Ayer.  “This group will provide us with much needed depth, and from a position standpoint, we’ll be able to fill many holes that were created by graduation.  We have a talented group of young women who will be able to step in right away as we continue to build up the program.”

Hemenway transfers to Coker from McNeese State University but did not play soccer there.  In high school she was named Most Versatile Player by her teammates and played extensively on the club team level.  She led the state tournament in goals scored for Imperial Calcasieu Rage and earned MVP and Player of the Year awards along the way.

Hall played on a talented Pope HS squad out of Marietta, GA and, as one of five seniors on the team, helped the Greyhounds achieve a ranking as high as number two in the Georgia 5A classification last season.  An extremely talented center midfielder, Hall has the ability to take over a match.  She earned 2nd Team All-Cobb County for three years consecutive and earned the Coach’s Award her senior year.  The Scholar Athlete should make a major impact in the Cobras midfield this year.

One-time rivals will be teammates with Stephanie Foster joining Hall in the Coker midfield next season.  Foster’s Parkview HS played Hall’s Pope HS several times over the past few years while both teams contended for a state championship.  Foster’s team won the state championship in 2003 and was ranked as high as 4th in the nation this season.  Foster will play a key role in midfield and her leadership qualities will be an asset to the program.

Basham and Jordon were teammates at North Myrtle Beach HS and will compete for time in defense.  Basham is a natural athlete who will play both soccer and tennis at Coker.  She also is an avid surfer who has competed in regional tournaments.  Jordon was a four-time All-Region defender and earned All-State honors as a junior.

Heinzelman comes to the Cobras from Chapin HS and provides an imposing presence as a 5-9 defender.  As a freshman and sophomore she was named All-Region, and as a junior and senior she earned All-State Honors.  In 2003 Heinzelman not only controlled Chapin’s defense but also tallied nine goals as the team won the Upper State championship before falling in the final.

Winn also arrives from Chapin HS where she played goalkeeper for the State runners-up.  Winn earned All-Area honors from The State newspaper in Columbia and enjoyed plenty of success at Chapin on a strong team.  She was also a member of the Beta Club and the National Honor Society.
