Late Goal Keeps Cobras Perfect

Hartsville, SC – Coker needed a late goal Wednesday night to pull out a 2-1 win over St. Andrews in women’s collegiate soccer.  The Cobras improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the CVAC, while the Knights drop to 1-4-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in the conference.

Freshman Cara Durrance gave the Cobras the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute on a free kick from the left of the box.  Senior Jodi Rummel struck a beautiful cross that Durrance rose up to head forcefully into the opposite corner of the net.  With the lead and momentum back on their side, Coker played a solid final 10 minutes and didn’t give up any dangerous chances.

Freshman Megan Shaver scored her sixth goal of the season in the 22nd minute to give the Cobras a 1-0 lead early.  Junior Terrie Watkins lofted a long throw-in into the box and Shaver calmly placed it in the lower corner.

Just over a minute later, however, the Knights struck back on a free kick from outside the box.  The shot, struck by Meghan McAuliffe, knifed through a timid Coker wall and swerved away from a diving Jacque Stewart in goal.  Coker nearly went back on top before the half on a long attempt by Durrance that plowed into the cross bar and out of the box.

Stewart saw only four shots in the game and made one save, while St. Andrew’s Meredith Yager faced nine shots, stopping five.

The Cobras are scheduled to take the pitch again this Saturday, September 20, at Barton College.
