Cobras Win Season Opener

Hartsville, SC -- Coker began the 2001 season in impressive fashion with a 3-1 conference win over St. Andrews Wednesday night. Freshman Erin Blevins scored the game-winning goal and assisted on the final tally in her first collegiate game.

Coker opened the scoring in the 22nd minute of play on a powerful shot by sophomore Brandi Bibby. The Cobras lead didn't last long however, as the Knights struck back only two minutes later to knot the score at 1-1.

That set up Blevins' captivating goal in the 31st minute, which proved to be the game-winner. The freshman from Ohio received the ball at midfield and dribbled all the way down the left side of the field, beating three Saint Andrews players, before slotting a shot in the upper right hand corner. Finally, with two minutes remaining in the first half, sophomore Jodi Rummel took a nice through pass from Blevins and beat the keeper with a low shot to end the scoring at 3-1.

Coker out-shot the Knights 18-8 and controlled much of the action, registering nine corner kicks in the contest. Senior Elizabeth Hicks started in goal for the Cobras and made three saves in the game.

Coker will next face Mt. Olive at home Tuesday, September 11, at 7:00 PM. The Cobras stand at 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
