Cobras Pick Up Big Conference Win

Hartsville, SC -- Coker took a 4-2 victory over Anderson in an important conference match Saturday night in women's collegiate soccer. The Cobras gave a solid effort all-around in improving now to 2-3, 2-2 in the CVAC, while Anderson drops to 6-2, 2-2 in the conference.

The two teams battled evenly throughout much of the first period and looked as if they may go into the half scoreless. However, sophomore Sara Lauzze picked up her first collegiate goal in the 39th minute to put Coker up 1-0. Then with only 1:30 remaining in the half the Cobras struck again, this time with freshman Erin Blevins blasting a shot which crashed off the cross-bar and down into the net to give the home side a 2-0 cushion.

After Anderson pulled back within one in the 57th minute on Emily Peschel's goal, sophomore's Brandi Bibby and Toni Crowel linked up for the Cobras final two goals of the game. In the 64th minute Bibby scored on an assist from Crowel and then returned the favor 1:40 later by assisting Crowel for a 4-1 lead. A late goal from the Trojans April Phillips from 40 yards out completed the scoring in the game

Coker out-shot the Trojans 10-7 and controlled much of the action, registering nine corner kicks in the contest. Senior Boo Hicks started in goal for Coker and played 65 minutes with four saves. Classmate Amy Kessler saw her first action of the season, playing the final 30 minutes with one save.

Coker will next travel to Limestone College Tuesday, September 25 to face the Saints at 5:00 PM.
