Cobras Offense Clicks In 4-1 Win
Hartsville, SC -- Coker's offense finally put it all together tonight to defeat South Carolina State 4-1 Tuesday evening in women's collegiate soccer. The Cobras improved to 4-6-1 overall while SCSU falls to 1-9.
Coker struck first at 11:21 in the first half when junior Cara Wilkerson put the ball away on a quick counterattack. The Bulldogs did not create many chances on the night but did put one away with six minutes remaining in the half to tie the score at 1-1.
Coker regrouped a bit at the half and scored an early goal in the second period. Wilkerson again found the net on a great cross from sophomore Toni Crowel. With a one-goal lead the Cobras continued to press and took a 3-1 lead when freshman Erin Blevins intercepted a poor goal kick and beat the Bulldog keeper one-on-one. Crowel got Coker's last goal with 20 minutes remaining with a hard shot that deflected off the keeper and in the net.
Coker controlled play throughout the match and kept SCSU out of their defensive end. Senior Amy Kessler played the full match in goal but was only forced to make two saves in the match. The Cobras out-shot South Carolina State 21-2 and held a 4-1 margin in corner kicks.
Coker has now won two-straight and looks to pick up a third Friday, October 12 at Lander. The match begins at 7 PM.
