Cobras Regroup For 2-1 Win

Hartsville, SC -- Coker scored a late goal to get a 2-1 non-conference victory over Newberry Sunday evening in women's collegiate soccer. The Cobras improved to 3-6-1 in front of a boisterous homecoming crowd, while NC dropped to 0-11-1 overall.

Coker got the first goal in the 19th minute on a great cross from freshman Erin Blevins. Blevins volleyed in the pass on the end line and sophomore Kristie Lowe redirected the ball home for a 1-0 lead. The game then got a little sloppy, as the Cobras seemed to relax with the lead.

Coker continued to stifle any Newberry chances and created many of their own but none were very threatening for the Indian's keeper. Eventually NC made the Cobras pay with a hard shot from the top of the box that found the net and tied the game at 1-1. Coker seemed to regain their edge after that began to attack with more urgency.

With only 7:33 remaining sophomore Sara Lauzze was pulled down in the box and CC was awarded a penalty shot. Junior Cara Wilkerson calmly stepped to the spot and fired a low shot to the left corner that beat the keeper.

Coker controlled play for the majority of the match, out-shooting Newberry 17-4. The Cobras held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks and kept the pressure off senior keeper Amy Kessler for the most part. Kessler started and played 90 minutes with two saves.

Coker will try to get a home win over Division I South Carolina State on Tuesday, October 9 at 6 PM.
