Hartsville, SC -- Coker took a tough 2-0 defeat at home to The Citadel Tuesday night in women's collegiate soccer. The Cobras created the majority of chances in the game but weren't able to convert any, and now fall to 2-6-1 overall.

Coker attacked the Bulldog defense time after time but was upstaged by an outstanding performance from Citadel keeper Jessica Watters. Watters made several spectacular saves on shots that appeared to be sure goals. The Bulldogs went ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute of the first half when Kelly Pesterfield got behind the Cobra defense and beat senior Amy Kessler one-on-one.

As the game wore on CC continued to crank up the pressure in search of the equalizer. Freshman Erin Blevins had a great chance with only the keeper to beat but Watters proved up to the challenge. Later sophomore Toni Crowel had another point-blank shot that Watters again stopped with a diving save. The Bulldogs got their second goal with 1:26 remaining on a quick counterattack against the pressing Cobras. Pesterfield got her second goal with a shot from 25 yards out that just made it past the outstretched hands of Kessler.

Coker out-shot The Citadel 16-5 but Watters was up to the pressure, coming up with 10 saves in goal. Kessler started and played 90 minutes with seven saves of her own.

Coker now tries to rebound at home this Sunday, October 7, against Newberry at 4 PM.
