Coker Falls In Tournament Opener

Wingate, NC – Coker College dropped a 66-57 decision to Presbyterian College Friday afternoon at the Miller Orthopedic Clinic Invitational at Wingate University.  The Cobras led by seven midway through the second half but couldn’t hold on for the victory.   Coker drops to 2-5 on the year, while PC improves to 3-7.

The two teams battled back and forth for a period and a half before the Blue Hose were able to gain control in the last five minutes. PC led 31-30 at the half but the Cobras jumped out early after the break and lead by as many as seven.  CC held a 51-44 lead at the media time out with 9:31 remaining before Presbyterian began to chip away at the lead.  PC out-scored Coker 22-6 the rest of the way.

The Blue Hose road the hot hand of Bonnie Werner and created numerous turnovers by Coker while regaining control of the game. Werner led all scorers with 24 points, including 16 in the second half. The Cobras turned the ball over 23 times and were out-rebounded for the first time this season, 37-33.

Junior Leanne Chandler led CC with 16 points in the game and was followed by classmates Selena Davis and Shamae Hemingway, who scored 14 and 10 points respectively.

The Cobras will compete again tomorrow in the Miller Orthopedic Classic at 6:00 PM versus Wingate University.
