Coker Wins Second Straight

Newberry, SC – Coker College earned a convincing 80-64 win at Newberry College Saturday afternoon in women’s collegiate basketball.  Three Cobras scored 19 points or more and the team out-rebounded their hosts by a 50-27 margin.  Coker is now 2-1 on the year and moves above .500 for the first time since the 1998-99 season.   The Indians drop to 0-2 overall

The Cobras opened up a 19-4 lead early in the first half and cruised to a 44-19 lead at the break.  Coker held Newberry to 20 percent shooting in the half and never trailed in the game.  The Cobras lead pushed 30 points early in the second half before NC began making trips to the foul line, where they connected on 82 percent of their shots in the second period. The Indians, however, never pulled closer than 15 points after the half.

Junior Shamae Hemingway led CC with 20 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.  Classmates Leanne Chandler and Selena Davis also came up big on offense.  Chandler finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Davis scored 19 points, including 6-7 from the foul line.  Freshman Sarah Dorsch turned in a solid nine points and seven assists at the point guard position. 

The Cobras will now prepare for their first CVAC action of the season on Monday, December 2, when Pfeiffer University comes to Hartsville for a double-header beginning with the women at 5:30 PM.
