Coker Earns First CVAC Win

Due West, SC – Coker College earned its first victory in conference play 69-59 at Erskine Thursday night in women’s collegiate basketball.  The Cobras turned back a furious come-back attempt in the final minutes by hitting 7-10 foul shots down the stretch.  Coker improves to 3-6 and 1-2 in the CVAC, while EC drops to 3-3, 0-2 in conference.

Erskine jumped out to a 6-0 lead on its first two possessions and maintained a lead for the majority of the first half.  Coker withstood the early charge and countered with its own 13-4 run to close out the half with a 32-29 lead.  The Cobras would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

Coker led by 13 with 7:15 remaining before the Flying Fleet started to chip away at the margin. EC pulled within two points at 60-58 with just over two minutes remaining before the Cobras put the game away at the foul line.

Junior Leanne Chandler led all scorers with 18 points and also tallied six rebounds and five steals.  Juniors Selena Davis and Shamae Hemingway also scored in double figures, with 15 and 13 points apiece.  Freshman Ashley White turned in one of her better performances of the season with eight points, 10 rebounds, and three assists.  Shakela Fuller led Erskine with 15 points.

The Cobras now prepare for a Saturday, January 11 trip to Queens University of Charlotte.  The afternoon game tips off at 2:00 PM and is followed by the men’s contest at 4:00 PM.
