Coker Narrowly Defeated At Home

Hartsville, SC - Coker narrowly lost 54-52 at home to St. Paul's College Saturday evening in women's collegiate basketball. The Cobras pulled themselves out of a nine-point halftime deficit and had their chances to win in the final minute but couldn't get the game-winner. Coker falls to 0-4 overall while the Tigers improve to 2-3 on the season.

The Cobras struggled in the first half to create good shots and as a result trailed 29-15 at the break. CC shot 24 percent from the field in the first period and had 16 turnovers. Coker regrouped in the locker room and came out on fire to start the second half.

The Cobras made their first four shots after the break to cut the Tiger lead in half after only three minutes at 32-24. SPC pushed the lead back to 12 briefly before Coker reeled them in again. CC went on a 16-1 run over the next eight minutes and had a 40-37 lead with 8:20 to play. The teams traded the lead seven times during the remainder of the game with St. Paul's going ahead for good with 1:43 to play, at 53-52.

Dalchon Brown increased the Tiger lead to 54-52 by converting the first of two free throws with 7 seconds remaining and Coker called their final timeout to set up a play with 5 seconds left. Head coach Katie Pate set up an inbounds play that gave sophomore Joetta Wade the ball for a final three point shot. Wade had a good look but her shot just rimmed out and St. Paul rushed onto the court, believing the game to be over.

However, during the shot Brown fouled sophomore Frederica McClary and the Cobras had their final chance to tie the game. With no time remaining, McClary stepped to the line but her first attempt cruelly bounced out and the game ended at 54-52.

Sophomore Shamae Hemingway, who scored seven of CC's points in their 16-1 run in the second half, finished with a team-high 12 points and nine boards. Hemingway was a perfect 3-3 from the field and shot 6-8 from the foul line. Wade totaled nine points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and classmates Leanne Chandler and Selena Davis each had seven points and three boards.

Coker returns to action this Tuesday, December 4, against CVAC rival Anderson College. The game is the first of a double-header with the men and begins at 5:30 in Timberlake-Lawton Gym.
