Brunson Leads Coker To Victory

Hartsville, SC - Coker received some clutch play from junior Lou Brunson in the second half to come back and defeat Mt. Olive 66-62 Monday night in women's collegiate basketball. Brunson connected for 19 points after the break and scored five straight points in the final two minutes that took CC from down three to leading by two at 64-62. The Cobras improve to 3-18 overall and 3-12 in the CVAC while the Trojans fall to 5-16 and 4-11 in the conference.

Coker recovered from a short scoring drought in the first half to trail 32-27 at the break. The Cobras stayed with MOC in the second half, taking a brief lead with six minutes to play, before making the deciding run with 2:38 remaining.

Trailing by six, Coker narrowed the lead to five and then three on a free throw and layup by sophomore Joetta Wade. Brunson then made another layup, was fouled, and dropped the ensuing free throw in to tie the game. CC got another stop on a steal by Brunson, and she drove down the court for a layup and a 64-62 lead. Wade polished the game off at the foul line, making both of her attempts with 22 seconds to play.

Brunson scored a season-high 26 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and three steals. Sophomore Selena Davis had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals, and classmate Leanne Chandler finished with eight points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Sophomore Sara Lauzze also chipped in nine points on 4-7 shooting from the field.

Coker begins a three-game road trip this Thursday, February 14 at Barton College.
