Coker Drops Season Opener at D-I Coastal Carolina

Conway, SC - Coker fell 57-37 at Coastal Carolina Saturday night in its season opener in women's collegiate basketball. The Cobras played an excellent first half, down 22-21 to the NCAA Division I Chanticleers at the break. But the CCU defense was stifling in the second period, holding Coker to only 16 points after halftime.

The Cobras showed confidence early, jumping out to a 14-5 lead at the start of the game. Coastal battled back but didn't take their first lead until the 5:20 mark on a three-pointer from Whitney Shearer to make the score 19-17. CC stayed tough over the final five minutes and finished the half down only one, 22-21

Coker did an outstanding job defensively in the first half on Coastal's Nikki Reddick of Hartsville. Reddick, a preseason All-Big South selection, was held scoreless in the first period on 0-4 shooting. However, in the second half Reddick began to show why she's an all-conference player. Reddick sliced up the Cobra defense for 28 points on 8-13 shooting overall and 9-11 from the line. Coker could do nothing to stop the onslaught, as Reddick scored 28 of her team's 35 second-half points.

Sophomore Shamae Hemingway/Conway, SC led the Cobras in a return to her hometown with eight points and nine boards. Classmates Joetta Wade/Myrtle Beach, SC and Salena Davis/Florence, SC followed with seven points each on the night.

Coker will aim for their first win this Tuesday, November 20 when they travel to face Greensboro College in North Carolina.
