Coker Can't Hold On To Lead

Wilson, NC - Barton College defeated visiting Coker, 53-42, in the first round of the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament on Monday night in Wilson Gymnasium, but not before getting a fight from the Cobras. With the loss Coker's season comes to a close at 3-23.

Barton, which beat Coker all three times this season, did not lead until 16:40 was left in the second half. The Lady Cobras, who had but one basket in the first five minutes after intermission, only led one more time, at 34-33, on a 3-pointer by sophomore Selena Davis.

The dagger for Coker came at the 1:41 mark, when it was only trailing 45-40. That’s when Lady Bulldogs point guard Susan Doggett took a pass from Seneka Blackwell and drained a 3-pointer. The Lady Bulldogs then hit 6-for-8 free throws down the stretch.

Junior Lou Brunson drilled 11 points and Davis and classmate Joetta Wade canned 10 apiece.

Barton won the battle of the boards, 40-35. The Lady Bulldogs shot 40.8 percent from the field (20-for-49) while Coker was just 15-of-56 for 26.8 percent.

Barton center Shemkia Reid dominated inside for the Lady Bulldogs with 25 points and 13 rebounds. She accounted for nearly half the BC points. No one else scored in double figures.
