Turnovers Cost Coker In Defeat

Hartsville, SC - Coker let a close game get away Saturday afternoon, falling 71-43 to Belmont Abbey in women's collegiate basketball. CC played the Crusaders even in the first half but 26 turnovers helped BAC pull away in the second period. Coker drops to 1-11 overall and 1-6 in the CVAC while the Abbey improves to 8-5 and 5-2 in conference.

Coker only trailed 32-27 at the break by hitting the boards hard to out-rebound BAC 22-14, and by pounding the ball inside to sophomore Leanne Chandler, who used her superior height to score 11 first-half points. The Abbey cranked up the defensive pressure in the second half, however, and forced the Cobras into 16 turnovers. CC struggled offensively; taking only 17 shots after the break and making only 4-10 free throws. The Crusaders took advantage of Coker's miscues and outscored the Cobras 39-16 in the second period.

Chandler got her second double double of the week, with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and classmate Selena Davis finished with six points, and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Frederica McClary also helped the Cobras control the boards, tallying eight points and six caroms.

Coker will look to snap a three-game losing streak this Monday, January 21, when they entertain Lees McRae at 5:30 PM.
