Coker Falls In CVAC Home Opener
Hartsville, SC - Coker lost its CVAC home opener 69-54 to Anderson College Tuesday evening in women's college basketball. The Cobras dug a huge hole in the first half and couldn't come all the way back despite a good effort in the second period. CC drops to 0-5 on the year and 0-2 in the CVAC while Anderson moves to 2-4, 1-0 in the conference.
The Cobras were blitzed in the first half due in large part to cold shooting and poor rebounding. Coker gave up 11 offensive rebounds and managed only 29 percent from the field. The Cobras found themselves down by double-digits again at the break, trailing 42-18.
But once more Coker regrouped at halftime and came out playing inspired ball. The Cobras scored the first 13 points of the second half in only 2:20 to cut the lead to 42-31. An aggressive press sparked the run by forcing six turnovers and five steals in that span. Anderson finally found their poise and took control again, pushing the lead back to 54-36 with 8:59 remaining. Coker made one more run in the game to get within nine but it came to late and the Trojans won by 15.
Amy Davidson torched the Cobras for 16 first half points and finished with 18 points in the game. In the second half Octavia Pope took over for the Trojans, scoring 15 of her 27 points after the break. Pope also pulled down 12 rebounds for a double-double.
With sophomore Shamae Hemingway out with an injury, classmate Selena Davis stepped up nicely with 17 points, three rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Leanne Chandler also had a breakout game with 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Coker will now travel to North Carolina to take part in a tournament at Wingate University. The Cobras will play Friday and Saturday against Winston-Salem State and Kennesaw State.
