Coker Falls To UNC-Pembroke

HARTSVILLE, SC – The Coker defense held up well for a half but wilted under the constant barrage of the UNC-Pembroke attack in the second period and fell 6-0 in men’s collegiate soccer.  The Cobras drop to 0-3-1 on the year while UNCP improves to 4-0.

Coker’s offsides trap worked to perfection in the first half as the Braves were whistled 11 times and the score remained knotted at zeros until the final two minutes of the half.  Pembroke finally broke through on a free kick which Joe Warenda flicked home unmarked.

The Braves broke through again six minutes into the second half on another dead ball play, this time connecting on a corner kick to the back post, which was headed back across the goal to Cristoph Schiessl, who headed the ball into the back of the net.

The Cobras defense broke down in the final 14 minutes of play, allowing UNC-Pembroke to inflate the final margin.  Trond Myrland scored to make it 3-0, and was followed three times in the next 11 minutes by Jose Sanchez, Schiessl, and Barat Killian to complete the scoring.

Pembroke maintained much of the possession and outshot Coker 21-3 in the match.  Sophomore Aaron Osteen went the distance in goal and made eight saves on the night.

The Cobras will continue their tour of the Peach Belt Conference on Saturday, September 13, when region rival Francis Marion travels to Hartsville for a 2:00 PM kickoff.
