Coker Drops Overtime Thriller

HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker went to overtime for the second game this season but fell 2-1 to Pfeiffer University in men’s collegiate soccer.  The Cobras battled gamely with nine men on the field due to two second-half ejections in a whistle-filled affair.  CC falls to 0-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the CVAC, while Pfeiffer improves to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference.

The Falcons struck first against the run of play in the 23rd minute with a goal from Jesse Powers. Powers took advantage of a foul just to the right of the box and looped the ensuing free kick over the arms of keeper Aaron Osteen.

Coker evened the score just after halftime on a free kick of their own.  Junior Gibson Baafour’s strike lifted over the wall and hammered off the cross bar and into the goal to knot the game back up at 1-1.  Baafour has been on a tear to start the season with four goals in his first three games at Coker.

The Cobras played the final 17 minutes with only nine men and turned back Pfieffer’s attacks through the 90 minute mark.  In over time CC sprung a counter attack and forced a corner kick in the second minute of play.  Sophomore Cameron Farris’s cross found senior Eugene Payne at the back post, but Payne’s header ricocheted off the cross bar and was cleared to safety by the Falcons.

Before the Cobras could get back on defense Pfeiffer was off to the races, and David Miller’s long run ended when he chipped a shot over Osteen and into the net for the game winner.

The frustrated Cobras will now try to regroup for a Friday, September 5 home game against Northwood at 7 PM.
