Coker Comes Back To Win OT Thriller
HARTSVILLE, SC – The Coker College Men’s Soccer Team played its most impressive match of the season Saturday, defeating Mt. Olive College 3-2 in overtime. The senior day atmosphere energized the Cobras as they played their most heartfelt, aggressive soccer in weeks. Coker finishes the season 2-12-1 and 2-8 in the CVAC, while the Trojans drop to 7-8-4, and 2-5-3 in conference.
Mt. Olive struck first in the 12th minute of the first half as Ryan Adamski beat Cobra keeper Brent Washburn short side. The Cobras responded later in the half when senior Dan Hargis found the back of the net unassisted.
The score remained tied at one until Cory Worrell put Mt. Olive ahead 2-1 midway through the second half. The Trojans appeared on their way to another victory after Coker went down a man with 17minutes remaining. However, senior Eugene Payne lofted the ball over the Trojan keeper and into the back of the net with less than three minutes remaining to force the game into overtime.
Tempers began to flare up in overtime period as both teams continually endured aggressive and highly physical play. This ended up benefiting the Cobras as junior Gibson Baafour was issued a penalty shot after being tackled while attacking the net. Baafour made use of his opportunity, beating the Trojan keeper to propel the Cobras to victory in their final match of the season.
Sophomore Brent Washburn made two saves for the Cobras in his first win of the season. The Cobras out-shot Mt. Olive 12-5 and committed only seven fouls to Mt. Olive’s 24.
The win ends the Cobras 2003 season on a high note.
