Coker Opens With 2-2 Tie
Wingate, NC - The Coker College and Lenoir-Rhyne College men’s soccer teams battled to a 2-2 tie in two overtimes in the Wingate University Soccer Classic. Both teams were playing their season opener.
Coker (0-0-1 overall) will face host Wingate University
Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Wingate University soccer facility, while Lenoir-Rhyne
(0-0-1 overall) will battle Anderson (S.C.) College Saturday at 2 p.m.
Lenoir-Rhyne led 2-1 at the half, thanks to goals from Eric Shaw and Travis
Wheeler. The Bears sandwiched their first-half goals around a beautiful header
(for a goal) by Coker senior midfielder Eugene Payne.
Coker tied the match at 2-2 on an unassisted score by junior forward Gibson
Baafour at the 52:22 mark. Both teams had opportunities to score down the
stretch, but neither side could convert. Lenoir-Rhyne had four shots (total) in
the two extra frames, including a wide-open look from Alex Maric. The Cobras
managed only one shot in overtime.
Lenoir-Rhyne outshot Coker 17-11. Both keepers went the distance. Bear senior
goalkeeper Tom Skora had three saves, while Cobra sophomore netminder
Aaron Osteen recorded seven saves.
