Late Goals Finish Coker
HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker stayed with Lees-McRae for most of the match Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 defeat in men’s college soccer. The Cobras were tied or trailing by one goal for three-fourths of the match but a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes ended any chance for a comeback. Coker drops to 1-11-1 on the year and 1-7 in the CVAC, while the Bobcats improve to 9-4, 6-1 in conference.
LMC went on top first in the 26th minute on a well-crafted attack, which George Burlacu slotted home for a 1-0 lead. The Cobras proved resilient however, and evened the score at 1-1 only nine minutes later. Freshman Chris Futral sent a long pass up the field that was fumbled by a Bobcat defender and squirted through to sophomore Scott Simmons. Simmons then netted his first goal of the year by quickly shooting past the onrushing keeper.
Seven minutes into the second half Burlacu scored again for a 2-1 lead, and got the hat trick in the 74th minute on an assist from Tim Bender. The final goal came in the 80th minute on a long range rocket by Nick Velasquez.
Sophomore Aaron Osteen made seven saves for the Cobras and Isaac Unruh made four for LMC. The Bobcats out-shot Coker 16-6 and committed 28 fouls to CC’s 14.
Coker travels to Queens University of Charlotte this Tuesday, October 21 for a 3:30 match.
