Coker Downs Limestone In OT
GAFFNEY, SC – Coker went into double overtime to collect its first victory of the season, 3-2 over Limestone in men’s collegiate soccer. With the win the Cobras improve to 1-7-1 on the year and 1-3 in the CVAC, while the Saints drop to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
The Cobras went on top in the 20th minute on senior Dan Hargis’ first goal of the campaign. Hargis was assisted by junior Gibson Baafour, his second of the season. The Cobras took their 1-0 lead into the half and held it 15 minutes into the second period before Limestone knotted the score at 1-1. Juan Trujillo raced past the CC defense and beat keeper Aaron Osteen in a one-on-one situation.
Freshman Sean Maupin put Coker back on top 18 minutes later with his first goal of the season but the Saints pulled even again in the 85th minute on a penalty kick by Eric Ballard. The Cobras, who have gone to extra time twice already this season, knew what faced them and kept their resolve.
Finally, with 3:53 remaining in the second OT, Maupin broke free again and put the game-winner into the back of the net off an assist from junior Aaron Taylor.
Coker will next take the field on Homecoming, next Saturday, October 4, against Anderson College. Kickoff is scheduled for a 2:00 PM.
