Coker Drops Homecoming Match In OT
HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker dropped an excruciating match 2-1 in double overtime to Anderson on Homecoming Saturday in men’s collegiate soccer. The Cobras fall to 1-8-1 on the season and 1-4 in the CVAC, while Anderson improves to 1-9-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference.
The Trojans Trevor Hansard netted the game winner in the 107th minute on a well-placed shot that beat keeper Aaron Osteen to the near post. Hansard’s strike came after AC had gone down a man on Chase Steele’s red card in the 103rd minute.
The two teams played a competitive first half but went into the break knotted at 0-0. Coker finally pulled ahead in front of a large homecoming crowd in the 58th minute on a beautiful goal by senior Derek Whitmire. The ball was deflected following a cross to the top of the box, where Whitmire hammered a dipping shot by keeper Jack Ward.
The Cobras seemed to let up a bit after the goal, however, and five minutes later Anderson equalized. Osteen made a fabulous diving save but the rebound went right to Marcus Bradley, who calmly fired the ball past the scrambling keeper.
The match remained tied through the end of regulation and Coker quickly established control of the first overtime period. CC controlled possession and created several dangerous chances which were just off target. The real blow for the Trojans seemed to come on Steele’s hard tackle from behind which resulted in a straight red card for the freshman.
However, just as the game looked to be headed for a tie, Hansard struck to send the visitor’s home victorious.
The Cobras must put the difficult loss behind them and regroup for Wednesday’s home double-header against an always-tough Belmont Abbey squad.
