Pembroke, NC – Coker College needed an extra frame to earn a 50-45 victory at UNC-Pembroke Tuesday night in men’s collegiate basketball.  The Cobras out-scored UNCP 11-6 in overtime to win the defensive struggle.  Coker improves to 2-4 on the year while the Braves drop to 0-6 overall.

The game was marred by poor shooting and turnovers but the Cobras were able to get things going when it counted in overtime.  CC shot only 26 percent from the field while Pembroke managed only 33 percent from the floor.  Coker was out-rebounded 49-34 in the game but was able to even things out by forcing 32 turnovers, including 12 steals. 

After taking a 23-17 lead into the break the Cobras scored only 16 points in the second period.  The Braves tied the game with 1:56 to play but neither team scored the rest of the way and the teams went into the extra period tied at a surprising 39-39. 

In overtime UNCP tied the game at 45-45 with 1:58 to go but senior Derrall Beason put hit a three pointer to put CC back on top 48-45 with 1:14 remaining.  On Pembroke’s next possession the Braves got four offensive rebounds before Beason finally corralled the ball and iced the game with two free-throws.

Beason led the way for CC with 19 points and six rebounds.  Beason was the only player for either team to score in double digits.  Freshmen Johnny Jackson and Jason Fulwood followed Beason with six points apiece, each making a pair of three pointers.  Coker held Pembroke’s leading scorer, Matt Hubbard, to only three points on the night.

Coker will take the Winter Break off and won’t be in action again until January 9, at Erskine College.  The Conference game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 PM.
