Cobras Season Ends At Longwood
Farmville, VA – Coker College ended its season Monday night with a 67-62 defeat at Longwood University in men’s collegiate basketball. The Cobras had no answer for the Lancers inside duo of Charles Stephens and John Parker, who combined for 32 points and 17 rebounds. CC finishes the season with a 5-21 record, while LU advances to Wednesday’s quarterfinals with a 15-13 mark.
Coker hounded the Lancers all game long, coming back from an early 11 point deficit to trail 34-28 at the break. Longwood again opened up a double-digit lead in the second period but the Cobras didn’t give up and made a valiant comeback attempt.
A layup by senior Chris Evans pulled CC within three at 65-62 with nine seconds to play. LU’s Zech Boyd made both free throw attempts after being fouled with eight seconds left and the Cobras were unable to get a final shot off.
Senior Derrall Beason ended his Coker career with 20 points and freshman Johnny Jackson took on some of the scoring burden with 16 points on 6-7 shooting. Sophomore Terry Whitaker added 13 points and five rebounds before fouling out with 2:38 to play.
Stephens led the Lancers with 19 points and 10 boards and
Ryan Earl added 14 points. Parker finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
