Cobras Race By Bobcats
Hartsville, SC – Coker College picked up its first conference win Monday night with a convincing 76-60 decision over Lees-McRae College in men’s collegiate basketball. The Cobras held LMC to 35 percent shooting in the game and forced 24 turnovers. Coker improves to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the CVAC, while the Bobcats slip to 1-13 and 0-4 in the conference.
Lees-McRae used a 10-2 run to pull ahead of CC 10-6 in the early stages of the game but the Cobras regained a 15-14 lead with 9:47 remaining in the half and never trailed again. Coker pushed the lead to 29-18 late in the half before taking a 31-22 advantage into the break.
Dominic Serafini opened the second period with a layup and the Cobras never let their lead drop below ten points the rest of the way. CC was able to maintain the large margin by heating up from behind the arc, where they hit 6-12 three pointers in the second half.
Senior Derrall Beason had the hot hand again, following his 29 point effort at Queens on Saturday with 22 more against the Bobcats. Beason shot 6-9 from the field, including 4-5 from three-point range, and connected on 6-9 free throw attempts.
Freshman Jason Fulwood showed off his smooth jumper with a career best 13 points in only 12 minutes. Fulwood hit 3-5 from behind the arc and also dished out two assists. Serafini collected seven points and six boards, and senior LaDerek Snell finished with six points and seven assists.
Lees-McRae’s Jermaine Johnson led all scorers with 23 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals. Shawn Zellers reached double-figures with 11 points and seven rebounds, and Tim Price turned in an all-around effort with seven points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Cobras will take the court again this Thursday at home against Mt. Olive. The men will play the second game of a double header, beginning at 7:30, after the women’s contest.
