Coker Fall On Senior Night
Hartsville, SC – The Coker College men’s basketball team couldn’t keep up with the red-hot Barton Bulldogs Thursday night in a 93-64 defeat. The Bulldogs shot 55 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Cobras 42-29, including 17 offensive rebounds.
Coker drops to 5-19 on the year and 3-16 in the CVAC, while BC moves to 21-3 and 17-3 in the conference.
The Bulldogs raced up and down the court and put up 50 first-half points on 53 percent shooting. Barton also connected on seven three pointers, which the Cobras could not answer. CC tried to utilize the three ball to keep up but managed only 2-13 shooting from behind the arc.
The second half wasn’t much different but the Cobras did work to find better shots. Coker connected on 48 percent of its shots in the second period and scored 39 points, only four less than the number one team in the East Region.
The most exciting play for the Cobras came midway through the second half. Coker set up to inbounds the ball underneath the basket and freshman Johnny Jackson fed sophomore Terry Whitaker for a monstrous one-handed ally-oop slam.
Senior Derrall Beason scored 22 points and grabbed three steals in his last home game as a Cobra and played the entire 40 minutes. Whitaker scored 15 points and senior Dominic Serafini chipped in nine points and a career-high four blocks.
Tim Black, the fourth-leading scorer in NCAA Division II, matched his season-average with 25 points and also pulled in five rebounds and four steals. Dwayne Pean contributed 17 points and five boards and Ervin Gregory added 13 points. Matt Kirkland came off the bench to dish out a team-best five assists in only 12 minutes.
Coker closes out the regular season this Saturday, March 1, at St. Andrews. The game is scheduled for a
