Science & Mathematics: Expect Great Things
Major in science, mathematics or computer science and you will be well prepared for a career that requires analytical thinking; the ability to organize, think and communicate logically; an aptitude for details; and the confidence to make appropriate decisions; all of which are essential tools for succeeding in a complex, technology-based world. Whether you want a career in the corporate world or see yourself as a teacher, research scientist or physician, the goal of our program is to provide you with an in-depth, first-hand understanding of the theoretical and practical applications of science and mathematics. Our program gives you opportunities to grow academically and as a person in the classroom, in science or computer labs, and through internships, laying a foundation for lifelong success. Each member of our science and mathematics faculty has broad experience in the principles and practical applications in the disciplines they now teach. In addition to leading classes, our faculty also works closely with you during lab, guiding and supporting your research projects. We also have visiting faculty members who teach in addition to pursuing full-time careers, bringing an added dimension of “real world” experience and insight to you. MATH: This program focuses on quantitative thought and analytical reasoning, using pure and applied mathematics. Courses of study include algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, probability and statistics. COMPUTER SCIENCE: This program includes classes in systems management and utilization, digital Logic, operating systems, automata theory and compiler design. BIOLOGY: this program prepares students for a career in health care, education, forestry, and othe science-related industries and for medical or graduate school.
CHEMISTRY: this program prepares students for careers as scientists, educators and health care professionals by emphasizing the practice of chemistry and its underlying principles. MEDICAL
TECHNOLOGY: offered
in conjunction with McLeod Regional Medical Center (Florence, S.C.), this
four-year degree consists of three years at Coker and the fourth year,
a clinical rotation, at McLeod. Students complete liberal arts requirements
as well as courses in chemistry and biology.
