Education Building

Major in early childhood, elementary or secondary education and you will be well prepared for a career that requires commitment, compassion, cultural literacy, and a strong foundation in teaching methodologies. Whether you want to pursue a career in early childhood, elementary or secondary education or teach specific subjects in middle or secondary school, our program will provide the opportunities and support you need as you develop your talents to the fullest.

One of the special advantages of earning your education degree at Coker is flexibility. You can work with other academic departments to get the training necessary for certification in five different areas. All it takes is careful planning, a desire to succeed, and guidance from our faculty.

Another advantage is the hands-on experience that begins in your freshman year when you begin a series of internships at local schools. By observing and assisting experienced teachers, you will be well prepared for when you are responsible for teaching your own students and managing a classroom.

Coker education graduates are among the best qualified in the Southeast and are much sought after by school districts. Our graduates are known for their competence in subject matter, teaching skills, commitment to the profession, compassion for children, and leadership ability. They also score exceptionally well on the standardized tests required of education majors.

“Being an education major at Coker College is like being a part of a big family; someone in the education department is always there for you.”
- Michelle, elementary education major

Coker’s education faculty does more than teach. Each member ofour faculty has first-hand experience in the education world, living and practicing the principles they now teach. Their educational backgrounds, technical expertise, and life experiences make them uniquely qualified to be your teachers, mentors and role models.

We also work closely with “master teachers” in the public school system who bring an added dimension of “real world” experience, insight and guidance to you.
