More Communications

When you major in communication, English or foreign languages, you will be well prepared for a career that requires confidence, creativity, and the ability to express yourself both orally and in writing - all of which are essential tools for succeeding in a complex and rapidly evolving world. Whether you seek a career in advertising or public relations, or want to use your language skills to pursue a role in international business, governmental affairs or teaching, our goal is to provide you with an academic and personal foundation for success. Coker communication, English and foreign language students have completed internships with advertising agencies, newspapers, radio and television stations, international corporations, publishing companies, and government agencies.

COMMUNICATION: After completing core courses in theory and mass communication, Coker’s communication program allows you to focus on your field of interest. You can choose from print and broadcast journalism, public relations, corporate communication, sport communication or script writing. You can also get involved with Coker’s student publications - campus newspaper, yearbook and literary magazine - and earn credit hours. Internships are another way to earn academic credit and professional experience.

ENGLISH: You may choose to major in English as a pre-professional major for preparation in fields such as management, advertising, public relations, publishing, law or social service. English majors may also complete a special concentration in education or professional writing. In both cases, you will need to combine appropriate coursework from other departments with relevant internships.

SPANISH: Coker’s Spanish major provides a comprehensive program of study that enables serious students to achieve fluency in the Spanish language and a broad understanding of Spanish and Latin American culture, history and literature. Courses are conducted in Spanish as much as possible to give you the opportunity to strengthen your speaking skills. Coker’s study abroad program is an excellent way to further develop your Spanish-speaking skills and appreciation for Spanish and Latin American culture.
