“The Art Department at Coker revolves around students. You don’t have to compete for professors’ time. I even have my own photography lab that’s open 24/7 so I can do my stuff when I want to do it.” - Jennifer, art major

Major in art at Coker College and you may select from four concentrations: fine arts, graphic design, photography or art education. In each case you will receive a solid foundation in both studio skills and computer technology that emphasizes content and quality of expression. Our nationally recognized faculty encourages experimentation with a variety of media, working side-by-side with you to provide technical support and to challenge your creativity.

You won’t spend all of your time in class. Plan on trips to visit museums, galleries and special exhibitions. Professional artists visit on a regular basis. For those studying art education, you will work with children starting freshman year, culminating in student teaching during your final semester.

FINE ARTS: appreciate a variety of artistic styles while focusing on an area of particular interest, whether it’s drawing, painting, sculpture, or ceramics. Prepare for a career in museum work, art production or graduate school.

ART EDUCATION: certification in art education combines art history, studio arts and computer graphics with courses in education. Prepares teachers for grades k-12. Student teaching provides valuable classroom experience.

GRAPHIC DESIGN: develop skills and experience in design theory, typography, computer-aided design and production. Prepare for a career in advertising agencies, design studios, web-based design groups, publishing or graduate school.

PHOTOGRAPHY: courses in the artistic and technical aspects of photography along with courses in studio arts, providing a solid foundation for a career as a commercial or studio photographer or graduate school.
