Welcome to the Evening and Extended Studies Program
Coker College was founded in 1908 when Major James Lide Coker used his initiative and financial support to bring about the chartering of a private college for women in the Pee Dee section of South Carolina. From the decade of the twenties until after World War II, it was the only college between Columbia and Charleston accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In 1969, Coker became officially coeducational and allowed men to reside in the residence halls. (Men did attend the college on the GI Bill following WWII.) Throughout its history, Coker College has provided a liberal arts education of the finest quality, has sought to stay attuned to the needs of it students, and stressed the importance of individualized education. In 1973, Coker College was invited by the Department of Defense to offer degree completion opportunities for members of the Armed Services at Fort Jackson. So, for 35 years, Coker has been providing educational opportunities for adults who wish to complete their bachelor’s degree. Today, the Evening and Extended Studies Program (EESP) provides an alternative schedule to our traditional day classes at four different locations. In the Coker College Evening and Extended Studies Program students are able to attend full-time at reduced tuition, receive the benefits off all the federal and state financial aid programs, and possibly complete their degree in four years by attending two nights per week and five terms per year. The Evening and Extended Studies Program calendar divides our traditional semester into two-eight week terms, so there are four terms per year plus a fifth summer term. Two three-hour courses can be taken in each term which will allow a student to earn 30 semester hours of credit during one academic year. In order to graduate, a student must earn at least 120 semester hours. The Evening and Extended Studies Program consists of approximately 500 students enrolled in one or more of our four sites. These sites are: Hartsville (Coker College's Campus), Fort Jackson, Lake City, and Mullins. Students may enroll at any of the sites depending on their academic needs.
