On behalf of the Class of 1995, I would like to offer our condolences to the family of Dr. Jim Daniels who passed away in June.

Dr. Daniels was an integral part of our lives at Coker and will be missed by those whose lives he touched.

I heard from Chris “Skippy” Patterson. He’s in the Charleston area and doing what he does best - playing music. His band is the DaliDrama.

Jeff Sheahan dropped me a quick hello on my myspace page and seems to be doing well.

While we’re on the subject of myspace, there is a Coker Alumni profile (www.myspace.com/cokeralumni).

Be sure to add them to your profile, if you have one, so you don’t miss out on the latest news.

That’s all I have for now. Please don’t hesitate to drop me a line so we can know what’s happening in your neck of the woods. Also please remember Coker by sending a donation to the annual scholarship fund.
Ciao,
Heather

Patricia M. Evans emailed “Hi, It's been a long time since I let my fellow classmates know what's been happening with me. Well to start off with, I currently have 2 sons in college. I am the proud grandmother of an 18 month old grandson (Robert "RJ" McCormick, Jr.) that lives in Cheraw.
I moved back from Greensboro to Rockingham NC to be near him and spoil him. My middle son is in the process of enrolling in the Navy (Proud of him also).

My sister, Tina Esaw, joined my alma mater (Coker College) as a evening student!!!!!! In March I started a non-profit organization called "Maknadifrence" (Making A Difference). I work with ex offenders when they transition back to society from prison. Currently, I am All But Dissertation (Walden University) on my Human Services: Criminal Justice Degree. I take my licensure test for LPC in August. So you see so much has happened....and you know what? It all started at COKER COLLEGE back in 1992-1996. ALLOW YOUR LIGHT TO SHINE; MAKE A DIFFERENCE”

Noemi Champo Tassios was recently featured in the Inner View July 2007 edition. Noemi joined the U.S. Navy, enlisted in the Reserves and completed her degree in exercise science in 2 ½ year from Coker College.

She met her husband Jimmy at Florence’s Fitness Forum and they married in 1997. After earning her masters degree in exercise physiology she joined the Army National Guard.

She was deployed to Iraq when her daughter was just four months old. Her advice to help ease the burden of soldiers “the best thing you can do is to make sure their families are taken care of.”
Congratulations to Fara and Christopher L. Yarbrough on the birth of daughter Addison Leigh Yarbrough born on February 21, 2007 in Decatur GA. If you have any question, call grandma, Pat Cullum Yarbrough ’61.

Hello all! Life is changing here in Hartsville. Believe it or not but Hartsville now has a Lowe’s. Those of you who haven’t been here in a while would be shocked at all the changes. Speaking of changes Mike and I experienced a pretty big one in May. We adopted two little girls through the local Department of Social Services’ foster care system. Destiny (6) and Danielle (3) joined us on May 25th. We met them for the first time on May 4th and got to know them a little bit more the following two weekends. Then on the 25th, we made the big move. We are adjusting to being a new family but we are all pretty excited. Let me tell you, it is a major life change to become instant Mom to two ACTIVE youngsters. They are keeping us on our toes but we’re, just and I mean just, young enough to keep up with them.

The class of 1997 is doing great as we celebrate, or lament, our 10th year apart from Coker. I heard from the usual suspects recently and here’s what they had to say:

Alison Wood and her partner Ron live on their sailboat, Juichi, in Port Townsend, WA. She’s a rigger at Brion Toss Yacht Riggers and is currently the project lead on the re-rig of a gaff rigged schooner in…wait for it…Hawaii. She gets paid to spend two weeks in Hawaii at a time when the Pacific Northwest is still a bit chilly. Talk about living the hard life. I guess all her hard work is paying off. She wants everyone to know she is happy and doing well.

Jason Perkey is back in Louisville after living in D.C. for four years, practicing national security whistleblower litigation. He’s playing loads of golf again, spending time with his parents, and just enjoying some down time, away from work.

Jo Sim is living in Brooklyn and freelancing as a scenic painter in NYC. She says work couldn’t be better although she seems to be working at a different place every other week. She has reconnected with Bryan White who is living in Chicago so hopefully we will get some updates from Bryan soon. We’ve been waiting.

Joe Albin sent pictures of his two angels, Adam (3) and Allison (1) and they are adorable. They along with Joe’s wife Jodi still reside in Pennsylvania.

Rachel Young Rhodes and her husband Trevor celebrate their 4 year wedding anniversary this year. Wow I can’t believe it’s been 4 years since their beautiful wedding on the beach in Mt Pleasant. They are living in Irmo and Rachel just started a new job with the Veterans Affairs Regional Office in Columbia. Rachel is continuing the Young legacy there because her dad retired from there after 32 years of employment and she started less than two months later. Rachel says she and Trevor are just enjoying life with their 3 dogs, Bishop, Arthur and Merlin.

Congratulations are in order for Summer Josey Meetze. She is expecting her second son this fall giving 4 year old CJ a playmate. Hopefully she can give her dear dad a wonderful birthday present by giving birth on his birthday.

Teri Little still resides in San Diego. Good luck trying to get her away from there. Can you blame her? She and Elle celebrated their one year anniversary this year. Other exciting news from Teri; she is pursuing a Master's in Educational Technology at San Diego State University. It's a mixture of computers, education, and psychology which is perfect for her combining her education and work experience.

On a more serious note, we were all deeply saddened to hear about Dr. Daniels’ passing. He WAS Coker to most of us and we lost a little bit of Coker when we lost him. We all echo Perkey’s sentiments when he says, “I firmly believe that Coker College is where it stands today because of Dr. Daniels. And, I firmly believe that there should be a movement to create a memorial, scholarship, or name something substantive in his honor; something we can visit and tell our children about this great man.” We are all truly blessed to have known and been known by someone with such kindness, integrity and strength. I know my life has been immeasurably enriched by having known him and learned from him and served with him while at Coker. He will be missed.

Tanya Keith finally moved out of the big city of Kershaw, into the bigger city of Rock Hill! She recently became engaged to a wonderful guy, Peter Kobylarz, who is a technical sales engineer by day and a bass player in a band by night. Who could ask for more? They are planning an April wedding and cannot wait! Lisa Miller, Holly Hall Becker ’00, and Karol Lowery ’96, will all serve as bridesmaids. She is still working in Human Resource for Controls Southeast, Inc. in Pineville, and still loves the HR field.

Lisa Miller is living in Columbia, and works at Colonial Supplemental Insurance as the National Recruiting Specialist. She is engaged to Ryan Sneed, and they are planning a February 2008 wedding. Ryan is a childhood friend of Karol Lowery ’96, and Tanya Keith will be the matron of honor. Tanya Keith and Lisa actually got engaged the same night, within an hour of each other! Lisa is also serving on the Coker College Alumni Board.

John E. (JJ) Johnson, Jr. will be entering his 9th year of teaching this fall. He is currently teaching Visual Arts at Lower Richland High School in Hopkins. He had a student to win Best in Show for the Annual Richland County School District One Art Show (the 1st time Lower Richland High has ever won the award). He has also been nominated for the 7th straight year for Who's Who Among America's High School Teachers. His wife, Bornita, and he are approaching their 4th anniversary (October 25th) and their daughter, Amaya, is three years old.

Shane McElveen is currently a web designer for Media General in Florence, and he still lives in Scranton. His son, Seth, is nine years old, and his daughter, Willow, is four years old. Both children are doing well. Shane can be contacted at shanemcelveen@gmail.com.

Jack Kirven started his own dance company in Charlotte, NC (Viscera Dance Theatre), and he works for a newspaper in Charlotte as well. He left the education career behind (FINALLY!!), and has been accepted into the #1 male go-go club in the USA, and he dances there in Atlanta every weekend. He has written the first draft of a novel and he’s even started organizing his diaries in order to work on a memoir of his experiences growing up and going to college in the pre-"Will and Grace" south.

Katie Hanson Pate ’97 and Tully ’95 still reside in Belmont, NC. Katie is the head women’s basketball coach at Belmont Abbey College, and Tully serves as the Athletic Director to the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics. He also continues to do financial advising part-time with Western International Securities.

Mirah White Welday and Kurt wish us Aloha from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii! Kurt is stationed on the USS Russell and Mirah is still teaching a course for enlisted sailors. Luckily, her position has been able to transfer with all the moves they have made. They love Hawaii so far (they arrived late December '06)! They live on historic Ford Island near the USS Arizona Memorial. Kurt went on deployment for a few months after they arrived and Mirah was able to fly and meet him when his ship went to port in Hong Kong. They spent a week together exploring Hong Kong...it was incredible!

Billy Mangan married Amanda on February 17, 2007. They still reside in Atlanta, GA.

Ashley Pruett is still working at ASHRAE, in Atlanta, GA, and was promoted from Manager of Student and Young Member Activities to the Manager of Membership and Customer Service in February. She has purchased a condominium in the Virginia Highlands, which is an in-town Atlanta neighborhood, and moves in the first week in August. She is also proud to announce the birth of her second nephew, Grayson Reid Butler (February 22, 2007), who joins big brother Jackson Ryan “Jack” (four years old).

Megan Brenna Holmes and her husband, Bradford, are still living in her hometown of Livingston, Montana. Her daughter, Brayton, will be six years old in July and is excited about starting first grade. Her son, Gabriel, is three and a half years old and is the spitting image of Megan – curly hair and all!

Karen Tallon is finally leaving San Diego on July 7th to head back to the East Coast! Her cross-country trip will include a stop at the Grand Canyon and Memphis. She has a job at a biotech company just outside of DC that she will begin on July 18th. She will be living in Gaithersburg, where she’ll only be about 3 hours from Brenda and Arthur in Suffolk and Jo Sim in NY.

Hello everyone,

Well here's the news from Louisa, VA. Chris and I are now proud owners of our very first house. We went to settlement on Friday and have been working like crazy since then. The big move is this coming Saturday so we are trying to get all the little things over to the house and ready so we don't have too much work to look forward to this weekend. I am still at Children's in Richmond, working my four days a week.

I have begun to work on my day off at a Nursing Center in Charlottesville which is a nice change from the kids. Chris is still at the University of VA. They are short staffed like the rest of the rehab world and he is feeling the crunch but still loves the job there.

My father recently went into the hospital and got an ICD implanted. He is doing well. We just had to tie him down for a little while because he does not like to sit still. My mother is doing great, just wondering when the grandchildren are going to come. So far we haven't helped her in that area.

My little brother is getting married the end of June and I can't wait. It's going to be fun watching him get used to having someone there with him all the time. They don't live together and occasionally don't see each other too much during the week so we'll watch and laugh from a distance.

Other than that, things are moving along a lightening pace. I think after 25 the world speeds up. Chris and I are looking forward to July, we are going to the beach for a week to relax. Hopefully during that time, our grass and plants won't die on us. Well that's it from the Hughes. Hope to hear from all of you with your news.

Hi class of 2003! I was able to gather some great information from a few of you. Here is what some of your old classmates are up to!

Shannon Lalla Candler married Matt Candler ’02 on their 6 year anniversary, October 7, 2006. Among their Coker alum wedding party were Cheryl Bruno Horwath ’02, Sabrina Wotier Peterson ’02, Donet Dillon Morf ’01, and Billy Mangan ’99. After honeymooning in the West Indies on the island of St. Kitts,

Shannon and Matt came back to their humble abode just northeast of Atlanta. Matt just finished his fifth year working for Tri-State Tire as a Sales Rep and Shannon is finishing up her first year at The Georgia Ballet, www.georgiaballet.org, as their Office Manager, Arts in Education Coordinator, and Company Manager. They’ve had a busy year as Shannon just finished her Masters and Matt joined every sports team imaginable to keep himself busy while Shannon was finishing up her final semester.
Shannon graduated on May 12th from Georgia State University with a Masters of Public Administration with a focus in Nonprofit Management and Matt has joined 2 tennis teams, 1 bowling league, countless softball teams, and a men's baseball team. Also, they started a family in December… they are the proud parents of an adorable black kitty and a chocolate lab! Now that school is finished for Shannon and some of Matt's leagues have ended they are really enjoying the married life and having fun with their friends and family. They extend an offer to anyone that is ever in the Atlanta area to give them a call. Shannon and Matt Candler, 860 Ahearn Court, Suwanee, GA 30024 Matt's email: candler9@hotmail.com Shannon’s email: dancinglalla@hotmail.com

As for Monica Carvajal Beben and Thomas they are in the process of opening a southern food restaurant in Washington. Smoking Mo's Kitchen should be open by August. While the pair lived in Charleston, Thomas worked with a well-known pit master there. He's brought what he learned and hopes to introduce the Pacific Northwest to real Carolina style barbecue. The couple sold food at a recent music festival and people there went crazy over mustard barbecue sauce. After a lot of encouragement and support from their friends, they decided to quit their jobs and focus all of our attention on the restaurant.
They just got back from South Carolina in May and wanted to share the big news, Jason Sparrow ’07 is now an official graduate of Coker College! While in SC they also played a round of golf with newly married Chris Taylor. They saw Vince Conner’s ’04 new baby and visited with Dave McKee ’01 and Staci Miles Morgan. Best of luck with the restaurant Monica and Thomas!

A big congrats to Cara Wilkerson Deese and Conrad Deese ’05 who just tied the knot! Mr. & Dr. Deese just got back from an amazing destination wedding in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. They absolutely loved it and were so excited so many of their close friends could come with them. Since the last update, Cara graduated with her doctorate in physical therapy, got a fantastic job in Atlanta, and loved their newly built house. Then opportunity knocked and Conrad got a job promotion down in Florida as the Business Office Director of Heart of Florida Hospital, so the couple made the move. Conrad loves his new job and Cara is working at a regular outpatient orthopedic job. Cara says it’s not as wonderful as Atlanta but she is trying to make it work. They live in Celebration, FL which they love because it's so perfect! It's really close to Disney and downtown Orlando, created by Disney, but no longer apart of Disney (so it's now minus the mushiness). They want everyone to know that if you're ever in town call them up!

Ellen Mason is still living in South Carolina and works for ARAMARK at Clemson University. She’s the production manager for Schilletter Dinning Hall. The next thing Ellen is working on is buying a place. Best of luck with the house hunting Ellen!

My old roommate Erin Earle is doing really well. She is a happy Australian now, that’s right she applied for her Australian citizenship and plans to never live anywhere else! Erin just got a new job with the government in one of the private hospitals there. It is treating brain injury patients so she will have her own section of patients, her own office, and even an official security badge which she is the most proud of! Erin is still happily dating her boyfriend Gary and running in marathons as often as she can!

As for my good friend, Courtney Smith, she is still living in Charleston. She is working with the Charleston RiverDogs Minor League Baseball team as Sales Manager/Webmaster. Courtney hangs out with Wes Daniels and her boyfriend, Geiger, on her free time away from games. She has enjoyed her new boat most of the summer and spent time at the beach working on the tan. She wants everyone to know that if you are in the area and would like a spin around the Charleston harbor give her a call or email. Courtney’s contact info is: Courtney Smith, Sales Manager, Charleston RiverDogs, (w)843-723-7241, (f)843-723-2641

As for your other class rep, Wes Daniels is living in Charleston working at Charleston Southern University as Director of Marketing and Promotions. He is in the process of selling his house and buying a new one. He has been spending his summer traveling, boating, beaching, and golfing. He still hangs out with Courtney Smith. They just finished up a kickball league where their team finished 3rd out of 15. Wes also attended Dr. Daniels funeral back in June. It was a very special service. He encourages everyone that knew Dr. Daniels to make a gift in memory of him to the scholarship fund. If you are ever in Charleston, please let Wes know.

As for me, my biggest news is I am now a Californian! I live just south of Los Angeles, right on the beach in Redondo Beach, and I absolutely love it! It’s pretty far from my home state of FL, but the weather and the beach view make it worth it! My fiancé was transferred out here by his company and since I was looking for a new job it just seemed to be a great opportunity for us. I got a new job with a large consulting company, Accenture, as a Workforce Transformation Consultant. I love my new job and the company! I travel a lot for work so hopefully I will be in some of your neck of the woods some time soon. Right now I fly to Houston every week to work with my client, BP. The only other thing going on for me is that I am busy planning my small beach wedding for next year. If anyone is ever in the Los Angeles area, be sure to stop by for a visit! My address is: Emily Marovich, 1100 Esplanade, Apt 10, Redondo Beach, CA 90277.

Richard A. Webre has been hired as director of the Office of Emergency Prepardness at the Ascension Parish in Gonzales, LA. Richard has also worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and served as an advisor to the commander of the U.S. Navy Space and Warfare Command in human resources. Congratulations Richard!
