Greetings Class of
1995:
I hope things are going well for everyone. Hard to believe it’s
been 11 years since we completed our time at Coker.
A few things to report from my corner of the Carolinas. David, Grace
and I have moved. We are now living in a wonderful neighborhood in Concord,
NC which is a bit closer to work for both of us and has two schools in
the neighborhood. I recently qualified for inclusion in the 2006-2007
edition of the Manchester Who’s Who Registry of Executives and
Professionals. The publication will be out in 2007. Beyond that I continue
to work at Hendrick Motorsports handling the Employee Events and Community
Relations. This fall, one of my co-workers and I will once again spearhead
a charity golf tournament to raise funds for the Hendrick Foundation
for Children – a charity which benefits sick and disadvantaged
children in and around the Charlotte area. We were able to raise more
than $420,000 last year and we are hoping to surpass that this year.
I have reconnected with Laurie Wagner Landers. She is
living in Hohenwald, TN with her husband, Josh and their son, Justis.
She’s teaching grades 1-3 at a private school and continues to
dance.
She wrote that Tim Tiller ’96 is also in Hohenwald. He’s
married and is running a real estate business.
Mark Hopkins wrote that he is an associate pastor and pianist
for Hermitage Baptist Church in Camden, SC. He and his wife, Amy, have been
married for eight years. They have a three-year-old daughter, Kaylee, who is
the light of their life and they are all doing great. He says hello to all
of our classmates.
Sarah Chapman ’93 and I continue to email back and forth
but since the move I haven’t been able to get back to her. There are
wedding bells in her future this fall.
I heard from Sam Fryer briefly. He’s doing well
and hopefully has some updates for our class too.
As always, please don’t hesitate to drop us a line or call and
let us know what’s happening in your neck of the woods. And
please remember Coker by sending a donation to the annual scholarship
fund.
Ciao,
Heather

Dear Friends,
I basically
dropped off the face of the earth. Having a two year old son will do
wonders to wreak havoc on one’s ability to communicate with and
to interact with the outside world. I’ve found a few moments
to come up for air, so I thought I’d take advantage.
There
is no quick soundbite that can describe being a parent of a two and a
half year old child. We are lucky to have him at the local Montessori
school where he is learning many things—including how to be a good
person. Drop me a note if you want me to gush and send pictures.
In
December, I left Alaska Funding Exchange where I had been working for
the past 2+ years as a grant research consultant and administrative sidekick.
A lot of that decision came down to the fact that I was working 15 miles
from home in an interior office in a badly decorated, poorly lit mall
annex.
I
have now started work with the State of Alaska’s Department of
Commerce, Community and Economic Development in the Division of Community
Advocacy as a research analyst. Most of my work will involve collecting,
imputing, and analyzing data about rural Alaska. It’s something
few people know about, and I’ll be one step removed from the policymakers.
(If you really want to know more, you can visit http://commerce.state.ak.us/dca)
The position is located on the 9th floor of the State Office Building
her in Juneau and I have a smoking hot view of the mountain, the water
and the Governor’s House.
Despite
all of this, I still find time to put toward my two main hobbies—my
mobile disc jockey company and unscripted theater (aka “improv”).
I just sent out a contract to DJ the Wrangell prom—my first contracted
event outside of Juneau since my return in 2002. (This is the third year
they’ve
contacted me and the first year that the ferry system cooperated.) I
have had several quality leads that will hopefully turn into contracts
soon.
On
the improv side, I just returned from the Seattle festival—the
second major festival where I have been brought in as a guest instructor
to teach grant research for the nonprofit theater. I had the chance to
see some really innovative work and receive some instruction that hopefully
I will be able to pass along to my own group. We’ve been inactive
for the last few months, but are getting back two of our cast members
who were gone for extended lengths.
I
hope everyone in my far-flung world is doing well. I’ll be especially
flattered if you reply.

Hey everyone! Lots of things have changed much here in Hartsville. I
hope you all will get a chance to come back and visit sometime. I got
the chance to visit Teri Little in San Diego this summer
for her wedding. She married a wonderful woman named Elle. I have to
say I couldn’t ask for a better person for such a close friend. Alison
Wood was able to make it down from Seattle (actually, Port Townsend).
It was great being together again. Alison, Chris Burger ’95
and I even found ourselves singing our Alma Mater, doing the cobra cheer
and the Green Machine chant for Elle’s sister and brother-in-law
at one o’clock in the morning. I guess people leave Coker but Coker
never leaves people. Alison is living on a houseboat for those who don’t
know. She is now working for a rigging company. I think that’s
right. They work on the rigging for boats, go figure. She’s looking
great and seems to be doing wonderful.
I received a surprise email from Tim Halverson. He recently
moved back to Milwaukee and currently works at Russell Investments as
a regional consultant. He has been married to his beautiful wife Julie
for 5 years and they are looking to add to their family. They are in
the process of adopting their first child from China. Hopefully by the
time you read this, Tim and Julie will have traveled to China and returned
home with their little bundle of joy. Best Wishes guys!
Summer Josey Meetze and I email each other on occasion. She
is still working at USC (she sees our old Coker buddy Art Hartzog occasionally)
and playing tennis. She is a league coordinator with the Lexington Area Tennis
Association and loves it. She helps with a lot of the administrative duties
of the league. Summer says they are still getting settled into the new house,
but things are finally coming together. And of course, her son, C.J., is 2
and a half and is a complete joy.
Jo Sim finally surfaced. She is living in Brooklyn, NY, with
Eric her boyfriend of 5 years and finally painting on Broadway. YEAH! She just
finished working on her second Broadway show and is doing some off Broadway
stuff here and there. The work isn’t as consistent as she would like
but she its getting better. For her 30th birthday, Eric surprised her by flying
in Karen Tallon Mollo ’98 who joined Jo for a sky-diving
stint. She admits it was a blast but something she will never do again. I’m
with you there Jo.
Rachel Young Rhodes and her husband Trevor bought a house
in March 2005 for which Trevor has big plans. They now have three dogs, Bishop,
Arthur, and Merlin, who keep them busy all the time. They even had their picture
made with them for Christmas presents to family. Rachel had one of those Coker
moments that just makes you smile. She was wearing an old Coker sweatshirt
out and had a cashier tell her that her brother-in-law’s brother went
to Coker and played baseball. Who was her brother-in-law’s brother…John
Curnias ’96. The cashier seemed surprised that Rachel remembered
him. Small world, in deed.
Well that’s all for now. I expect much more from us in the future
because next year is the ten year anniversary of our graduation. Can
you believe it…we’ve been out of college for ten years!!!
We need to make it special, so start thinking about what you’d
like to do. Hope to hear from you all. Take care and God bless!

Scott and Paige Brown Phelps ’99
are still living in Hartsville and are doing great! Paige is teaching
reading at Plainview Elementary School in Patrick and has started a
photography business. Scott is teaching in Florence at the Clinical
Day Program. Their daughter, Anna Carlin, will be five at the end of
July and loves soccer and dance.
Kristi Hanson Brannon and her husband Jason are still
living in Charlotte. Jason got a promotion to VP of Marketing for the
Charlotte Bobcats, and Kristi still sells real estate for Grubb Properties
(her current project is 1315 East Condominiums in Dilworth). They will
be celebrating their 3-year anniversary in September.
Tanya Keith is still working for a specialty piping-fabrication
company in Pineville, NC, as the Human Resources Administrator. Every
day is definitely interesting and they keep her on her toes! She plans
on making a move to the Charlotte area in the next couple of months.
Billy Mangan ’99 is still working for American
Tower, (going on 4 years now). He just took a promotion as a Project
Manager for the company. He gave up playing basketball for a much easier
sport on the body....softball.
Shane McElveen is the Advertising Graphic Designer
for the Florence Morning News, and is starting an internet-based design
firm named Lionfish Studios. He lives in Scranton, SC. His son, Seth,
is now 8-years old, and his daughter, Willow, is three-years old.
Ashley Pruett is living in Atlanta, GA, and is still
the Manager of Student and Young Member Activities at the American
Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers,
Inc. She is still playing and teaching tennis and agrees with Billy
Mangan that “a much easier sport on the body” may be in
order!
Kurt and Mirah White Welday moved to Athens, GA in June
after he completed Navy Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL. They
will be in Athens for approximately 6 months while Kurt completes Navy
Supply Corps School. They are already looking forward to moving to their
next duty station (yet to be determined). Mirah is still working with
a program that provides a responsibility and values course for sailors.

From Dean
Legge:
Hi y’all! I hope that everyone is doing well. I have seen a lot
of Coker people lately so I’ll just get right to the report. I
know it’s been some time since our last update, and I am sorry
about that, but here goes…
My wife Jessica Thigpen Legge and I are doing well.
We don’t have any children, but are practicing by baby sitting
our nieces and nephews – the troublemakers that they are. We just
celebrated our second anniversary in June. Jessica is still a pharmacist,
and I am still publishing my magazine. You can read some of my writing
at dawgpost.com.
Philip Dowdy graduated from Berry University in Florida, and
has moved to Michigan to start his rotation with a hospital up there. The soon-to-be
Dr. Phil is a podiatrist, and wants to settle down for good in a few years
either back in his home state of Kentucky or somewhere in South Carolina. He
is single.
Brad Morris has been the Union County Clerk of Court for the
last two years after successfully winning his election in the fall of 2004.
The big news with Brad is that he will be getting married to long-time girlfriend
Lucy on October 14, 2006 in Union. The two plan to stay in their hometown for
the foreseeable future. You can visit “The Honorable Brad Morris” here:
countyofunion.com/clerk.html
Shonda Miles Knotts is doing quite well. She and husband Wade
keep up with Jessica and me as often as can be expected for Shonda. She is
now a realtor in the Florence area, and would be happy to hear from old Coker
people for whom she can help buy or sell their homes.
Carmen Tyler is still working in Morganton, North Carolina
as an Art Therapist. Carmen has not changed since she graduated from Coker.
Quentin Grant got married in the summer of 2005 in Atlanta
to my cousin, Whitnee. The pair is expecting their first child this fall. They
live in Simpsonville, and both are teachers. Whitnee is teaching at a local
elementary school while Quentin will teach and coach at Mauldin High School
starting this fall. The soon-to-be newborn will be named Ellie Kate, and is
expected in early October.
Arthur Bradshaw ’00 lives just outside Suffolk, Virginia
with his much better-half Brenda Tallon Bradshaw ’00.
Brenda has completed dental hygiene school, and is currently working in that
field. Arthur is working for a subsidiary of International Paper in sales.
The two are very happy, and are not yet trying to have children.
Geoff Hughes ’00 still lives in Hartsville with his
wife, Brent Freeman Hughes ’02, who is working for the
railroad company in town (she loves her job). Geoff’s photography studio,
which is located downtown on Carolina Street in Hartsville, is going well.
Scott Taylor has completed work on his Masters degree from
the University of South Carolina, and completed his high school coaching career
at Saluda High School this spring. He has taken the assistant baseball position
at Lander University. Scott’s father Gary passed away last year after
a long fight with cancer. The good news in Scott’s life is that he and
wife Scarlet had their first child, Faith, this spring.
On July 1, 2006 Monty ’97 and Kelli Gardner
Carr welcomed their first girl Erin Alexis Carr. The family
is living in the Myrtle Beach area.
Buck Lally ’00 got married on New Year’s
Eve Night 2005 in Columbus, Ohio to his wife, and partner in crime whose
name I suddenly can not recall. The pair is living in Houston, and Buck
is considering a move to teaching in the near future. I recently saw
Adam Bunce in Hartsville. He has started a chiropractic office in town,
and is still single.
Woody Funderburke ’01 got married and moved north to
the suburbs of Baltimore. He works for Black & Decker in their IT department,
and is doing well.
I spoke with Billy Mangan on the phone for some time
this spring. He has moved back to Atlanta, and is a mortgage broker.
He is not married, and seems to be doing well and enjoying life back
home.
Quick updates: I saw Brad Perkins ’98 at the 2005
South Carolina-Georgia football game in Athens. In what has become a
yearly tradition, Scott Taylor, Brad and I have met up for the game.
Brad is doing well. He is, to my knowledge, still working for Blue Cross
in Columbia. He is also still single.
Jason Slutzsky, who is living in Chicago, is getting married
to long-time girlfriend Phalane in St. Paul, MN this August.
Katie Hanson Pate ’97 is now the Head Women’s
Basketball Coach at Belmont Abbey in Charlotte, and is doing well. She is married
to former basketball player Tully Pate ’95.
I ran into Candice Ivy randomly in Hartsville one day
while she was back home visiting he family in the fall of 2005. She is
married, and has lived in New York City as well as Boston since graduation.
She was featured at Charletson’s Spelato Art Festival last year.
I recently found out that Noah S. Lowther works for
DHEC in Columbia in the Drinking Water Compliance office. He is still
playing guitar in his free time.
I saw Dan Shanks ’97 at a few basketball games
this winter. Dan is doing quite well. He’s still married to
Christy, and has enrolled to get his Master’s Degree for Indiana
University, which is his home state. I was happy to see Dan back in the
U.S. after he spent some time playing professional basketball in Europe.
Please contact either myself or Shonda Miles with your whereabouts, and
what
is going on with you. My e-mail address is dean@dawgpost.com.

Congratulation to Tracy and Randy Cooper on the birth
of their beautiful daughter Megan Charlene Cooper on July 4, 2006!
Deitra Stover Matthews writes:
I’m sure that
I am the very last person you expected to hear from!! :) Anyway...
I was browsing the internet (something that I do every evening) and
I thought of Coker College! I went to the web page and read a little
on what some people have been doing since we graduated in 2000. I thought
that I could share some special events that have transpired in my life
the past six years: I graduated from Savannah State University (2002)
in Savannah, Georgia with my Master’s degree in Public Administration
with a concentration in Public Policy. I got married (2002) to a wonderful
man that I actually began dating our senior year at Coker. I actually
began to teach seventh grade Language Arts soon after. My husband and
I move around often because he is a Major in the United States Army.
I also had a beautiful little girl (Caroline Christian) on September
22, 2005 (8 pounds 13 ounces). We are currently living in Kansas City,
Kansas; but, I really hope to move back to the east coast very soon!
I have taken a little time away from the workforce to apply all my
attention to my little girl. This is really the abbreviated version
of the last six years; however, I’m sure that you are glad that
I did not go into any details.

Hiya, Class of 2001!
Well let us get right down to the updates and congrats!
Woody Funderburk has been married to Keirsten for over a year
now! She is Coach Dax’s sister-in-law. Hi, Keirsten! They live in Towson
MD, with their fur child Kodiak. Black-n-Decker is lucky to have Woody as a
wireless network support guru.
Vicki Cunningham has some awesome news! Vic is planning a
domestic/partnership ceremony to her lovely fiancée next February. She
is working at The Posse Foundation as a lead trainer. Vic trains young leaders
and finds them full scholarships to top colleges. As if, she does not have
enough on her plate; she is also writing a “book of sorts”.
Cool Beans, Woody and Vic! It would be nice to hear from the rest of
you! **HINT**HINT** : )
My family is well! Shawhan is on summer break, trying to balance relaxation
and running after Logan; its an adventure! No matter how crazy things
can be; we would not trade this for anything. I never thought being an
adult could be this cool!

I also got an email from Joel McEachran that can only
be fully appreciated in his own words. So…
"What’s up to all you brothers and sistas!!! This is Joel from deep

is “the most awesome four year old anyone can have,” has been surprising
her with her wisdom and humor on a daily basis! Pictures and stories of her
can be found on Summer’s myspace site at http://myspace.com/imacartoon.
Summer’s email address is imacartoon@hotmail.com. She said she would
love to receive emails from other members of our class!
Another “Congratulations” goes to Laura Hughes McKee who
is expecting a baby due in November! We’re so excited for you Laura!!
I’m looking forward to seeing Amy Kesler, Sabrina Wotier
Peterson, Donet Dillon Morf ’01, and
some other Coker alums in August at a baby shower for Adrienne
Oliver Johnson who is expecting a baby later this year. Congratulations
Adrienne!
Not too much news to report on my end. I’ve been traveling a lot
and enjoying the summer weather. I am still living in Charlotte, NC and
work with children with developmental disabilities. I currently work
with a 3 and a half-year-old little boy who is constantly teaching me
things and keeping me on my toes.
Thanks to all of you who sent in your news! It was great to hear from
you. I hope all of the class of ’02 are doing awesome and look
forward to hearing from you next time! Take Care!

From the class of
2003:
First of all, congrats to Rob and Jessica! Rob Christenson and Jessica
Pendergraft were married at Pawley’s Plantations on June
3rd of this year. They spent the next week in Jamaica for their honeymoon
which they said was great. Rob and Jessica just bought a house in Franklin,
TN as well. It is just 20 min outside of Nashville. Rob was recently
promoted to a sales manager for Dell and Jessica still works for a sister
company of Dell called Dell Financial Services. Rob and Jessica’s
new address is: Rob and Jessica Christianson, 600 Wildflower Ct, Franklin,
TN 37064
As for Thomas and Monica
Carvajal Beben, they have moved again! In March Monica and
Thomas decided to join Monica’s family out west and move to
Washington. They are right outside of Olympia. They say that Washington
has all of the things they loved about Charleston without the stuff
they didn’t… like the humidity and heat! They live right
on the water just across from Seattle. Thomas just started a new
job with Wells Fargo Financial as a Credit Manager. He loves it,
and Monica loves that he is home much more than he was able to be
with his last job. Because of a loss in the family, Monica has taken
time off of work to be with her mother for a while. As much as they
love Washington, they do miss getting to see so many of their Coker
buddies that always popped up in Charleston but if anyone decides
to see the Pacific Northwest, Monica and Thomas say they have a guest
room waiting!
D and Amber
Douglas Brown are expecting their first child this August.
D is really busy with his construction company and has many houses
going up in Hartsville as well as a few in Myrtle Beach. Amber is
still teaching at North Hartsville Elementary and will be teaching
third grade next year. Although a lot of new things are going on
for them, their biggest anticipation now is the birth of their son
James Heyward Brown. The baby is due August 20th but welcome
to come anytime he wants now because Amber says she is ready! Congrats
Amber and D and good luck!
As for Tiffany
Byrd, she is still working at Sonoco as a Marketing Analyst
and still loving it! Her boyfriend and her are in the final stages
of building their home and she says they will hopefully be moving
in by September! They recently bought a new puppy, a white miniature
schnauzer named Bailey.
Courtney
Smith is now living in Charleston working as the Sales Manager
and Webmaster for the Charleston RiverDogs, Single “A” Affiliate
to the NY Yankees. Right now she is living with a friend from home
but hopes to have a house of her own by the end of the year! She
is seeing a new guy, but nothing too serious yet. As usual Court
is focused on having a good time and hanging out with friends! She
says that if anyone is ever in Charleston and needs a place to stay
or wants to catch a baseball game, to drop her an email!
Jessica Mitrosky is
living in the fast paced, busy down town square of Pine Ridge (a fancy
name for the outskirts of Hartsville). She is still at the hospital
in Cardiac Rehab as an Exercise Specialist. She also works with Brianna
E. Bunce ’01 and Adam who opened Bunce
Family Chiropractic at Studio 212. Adam does the chiro and nutrition
stuff and Brianna does the personal training, dance, Pilates, aerobics,
etc. Jessica does some personal training in the afternoons. The big
news for Jessica is that she was married March 11 at the little garden
next to the Culinary Compnay. So she now goes by Jessica A.
Mitrosky-Drew. Her husband is Sammy Drew from McBee. Also,
Jessica is training for a 3 mile road race in October, hoping to come
in first. We wish her the best of luck! Jessica’s new address
is: P.O. Box 1941 Hartsville, SC 29551.
Ellen Mason has
recently moved back to South Carolina and is now a Production Manager
with ARAMARK at Clemson University.
It’s Shannon
Lalla who was hiding from the world because she had a lame
job at a Doctor’s office and is now coming out of the dark
only because I have good news to report. (Yep if I was still living
at home with Ma and Pa and working at the Doctor’s office I
would most definitely not be replying). Anyway...I’m glad you
are doing well! I miss you!! Congrats on Grad School and the great
job!! As for Shannon Lalla, she just finished up her first year of
Grad School at Georgia State University in downtown Atlanta. She
is getting her Masters in Public Administration with a focus in Nonprofit
Management. She is currently the Office Manager/Arts in Education
Coordinator of the Georgia Ballet (www.georgiaballet.org).
The big news for Shannon is that she and Matt Candler ’02
are ENGAGED!!!! Their wedding will be October 7, 2006 which is their
6 year anniversary at The Governor’s House in Kingston, Georgia.
Cheryl Bruno
Horwath ’02, Donet Dillon Morf ’01,
and Sabrina Wotier Peterson ’02 (now Mrs. Nathan
Peterson ’02) are Coker bridesmaids in the wedding
party. Matt and Shannon bought a house in February which they think
is absolutely adorable and would love for their friends to come visit!!
They live just North of Atlanta in Suwanee. Shannon’s new address
is: Shannon Lalla and Matt Candler, 860 Ahearn Court, Suwanee, GA
30024
Wes Daniels,
the other Class rep is currently living in Charleston and working on
his masters and working in Admissions and Financial Aid at Charleston
Southern University. He just bought a townhouse that he absolutely
loves and of course still has a good time going out, golfing, and hanging
out with Courtney Smith!
As for me, I have
just moved to San Antonio, TX! I am still working for a company called
SkillsNET. I have been with this company since I graduated from grad
school May of last year. The company is a Human Resource type consulting
company that specializes in workforce and job analysis. I moved to
San Antonio because my boyfriend of 2 years moved here about 7mo ago.
After moving I am still able to work for my company and just work remotely
out of San Antonio.
I loved hearing
from so many of my classmates and I hope to hear even more about everyone’s
successes and adventures since we have left Coker College. Good
luck to you all and I can’t wait to hear from you again!

Greg Hill married Casey Hill ’06 on
June 17, 2006
My husband James and I are living safely in Kenner, LA. We have been
married just over a year now, and are very happy. We don’t have
any children yet, but may be working on that very soon. For now, we are
house shopping in the area, and planning to stay around here for a long
time.
If
anyone has an e-mail address, phone number, or address of someone who may not
know about the alumni news, please send it along to the class representatives
so that we may share their news with the rest of the class as well. Thank you!
One last note for all my fellow Violet Power classmates: Don’t
forget about the Annual Scholarship Fund. I know a lot of us benefited
greatly from the generosity of others while we were at Coker. Let’s
all ensure that the kindness continues for generations to come.

Coker Class of ’05
News!
Known
to many of you as Jessica Brill, I decided to take on
the job of class representative, because I was very dismayed to see that
we had no class news on the Coker website. For starters, Curtis Lloyd ’02
and I tied the knot on October 1st 2005, and we currently reside in Birmingham,
AL. Curtis teaches elementary physical education in Leeds, AL and coaches
the high school wrestling and baseball teams. As for myself, I teach
dance, voice, and beginning piano at 5, 6, 7, 8 Dance & More,
a Christian studio in Springville, AL. We also recently accepted the
position of Youth Directors at our church.
Marjorie
Muldrow-Goodson is now working as a case manager for the Florence
County DSS. She plans to move to Columbia very soon to attend graduate
school at USC for the Eds in School Counseling. She says she is ready
for a change and hopes that all is well for all Coker students and graduates.
Since
graduation, Ben Johnson has been working two jobs, a
cook at The Original Italian Pie in Columbia and a clerk at CVS
Pharmacy.
Ben joined the Palmetto Mastersingers and is about to start
his own business, called Melaleuca. He said if anyone
is interested in working with him on his venture to get in contact with
him. (E-mail my account, and I will forward to Ben’s.)
Classmates,
if you have access to the Internet and have not received my e-mail messages,
please send your e-mail address to SmileRainmaker@aol.com. I will be
sure to add you to my list. I plan to send a mail out around Christmas
to the addresses you have all provided, so watch for other chances to update
all of your Coker friends with your good news.
Thanks and God bless,
Jessica Lloyd
